Welcome to Hartmans - Tiger Stripe Wall / Best Crack Area

City:GunnisonState:US-Colorado
Size:YearsStyle:Mixed
Season:Year-RoundDifficulty:Intermediate

Overview

The Tiger Stripe is a striking rock formation of red stripes. The wall is vertical and has a large number of possible hard lines up it. The Best Little Crack in Gunnison is a classic line up the drainage to the left of the Tiger Stripe wall. Do a small bit of scrambling and it's on your left. It really is the best.

How to get there

About 100 yards down the road from the Buddhas Belly turnoff, the Tiger Stripe Wall is a good landmark for both Buddhas Belly (you've gone too far) and Leap Of Faith (not far enough). It's immediately on your left and fairly close to the road. Pull off into a side road/trail.

(1) Best Little Crack in Gunnison (5.10a) Trad - Would be 5.9 if not for the heinous opening move. Good pro the entire way up. A second crux is in the middle getting over a bulge. The crack eats everything from small nuts to large hexes. Mid-sized cams are useful. No anchors at the top but you can walk off to the right. FA: John Hulett, early 80's

(2) Unknown (5.12b) Sport - A reletively new line up the left side. Don't get too nervous at the the top out. It's dicey but reletively solid.

(3) Unknown (5.12) Sport - Another new one. It looks to be 5.12-ish like #2 but no consensus has been reached yet.

(4) Tiger Stripe (5.10c) Sport - A very nice line up the middle of the wall. Protected by three bolts with two anchors at the top. The unfortunate placement of the third bolt means you really have to do the crux unprotected. The bolt is high enough that once your at it, the climb is already over. Great top-roping climb too though. Rap off or carefully walk off to the left.
